History
While Houston is now America's fourth most populous city, things were different at its founding in
1836. Brothers named John and Augustus Allen advertised the formation of Houston in a Texas newspaper, but by the beginning of 1837 the town boasted just a dozen residents. Growth came quickly despite a reputation for wildness and several yellow fever epidemics. Houston not only survived but also thrived as the years went by, making today's gracious standard of living possible.
