The Memorial area located in Houston, just west of downtown along the Buffalo Bayou. Its boundaries consist of Interstate 610, Buffalo Bayou, Sam Houston Parkway (Beltway 8) and is home to the villages of Piney Point, Spring Valley, Hedwig, Bunker Hill, Hunters Creek, and Hilshire. Bunker Hill Village, Hedwig Village, Hilshire Village, Hunters Creek, Piney Point, and Spring Valley.   Schools are managed by the Spring Branch Independent School District, which is recognized as one of the best performing districts in the state of Texas while serving nearly 35,000 students at 46 campuses.

History

The history is quite interesting in that everything began in the 1930s when rich people owned large plots of real estate because they owned horses. However, automobiles became a more prevalent form of transportation as stable owners sold their properties and the buyers built multiple homes on what once were single plots. Some of the homes for sale in the area today are those houses. This gives those looking for property in the area the option of homes with some history.

Parks and Recreation

Two of the richest nature areas in the state are in Memorial.  Buffalo Bayou is a lengthy waterway that starts just west of Katy and winds through the suburbs of West Houston and Memorial.  It's a popular spot for kayaking and canoeing.  The Terry Hershey Park is a city park that runs parallel to Buffalo Bayou for approximately 6 miles allowing for 10 miles of hiking, biking, picnicking and more.  At 1,455 acres, Memorial Park is one of the largest urban parks in the U.S.  It features cycling paths, softball and soccer fields, tennis courts, a golf course and the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center.  On a smaller scale than the large parks, the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary has 17.5 acres of Memorial charm.  A restored log cabin offers educational programs, summer camps and the starting location for family hiking.  This sanctuary is perfect place to bird watch and check out from the rat race for a while.

Attractions and Activities

 
Memorial City Mall is a popular shopping spot and hangout for locals and tourists. Although Constructed in the 1960s as a struggling competitor to other area malls, a renovation in the early 2000s turned it into one of the most popular malls in the Houston area. It is home to popular stores like Macy's, Disney, American Girl and has a number of upscale restaurants like Vallone’s, Churrascos, and Perry's Steakhouse nearby. There is no doubt that you can find a restaurant that offers the food that you want.  Adjacent to Memorial City Mall and connected by elevated bridge over the street is the acclaimed Memorial Hermann Hospital System and Westin Hotel.

Two more popular malls are Town & Country Village and CityCentre (a residential and business center), which feature a number of popular upscale stores, fine dining and Lifetime Fitness. The three malls together give individuals many shopping, dining, and entertainment opportunities in the area.

Events

There are many event venues throughout Houston that residents travel to. However, the malls have a great number of activities for people of all ages. For instance, the Memorial City Mall has Frolic’s Castle for the kids, a movie theater, an ice skating rink, a carousel, and live music at times.
